Emotie-honger doorzien

Honderd jaar geleden mochten psychologen wrede experimenten doen met mensen, zelfs met kinderen. Zo werd kleine Albert (een verzonnen naam) in de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw onderworpen aan een akelige proef.
Het jongetje van nog maar 11 maanden oud kreeg beurtelings een rat, een konijn of een harige knuffel in zijn schoot geworpen om mee te spelen.
Het kind was niet bang en vond al die beestenboel prima. Totdat de psycholoog plotseling met een hamer op een stalen staaf sloeg, vlakbij het hoofdje van Albert, op het moment dat hij de rat bij hem legde. Het arme kind schrok zich een ongeluk en ging luidkeels huilen. De psycholoog herhaalde zijn experiment telkens als de rat bij Albert werd geplaatst. Op een gegeven moment ging het jongetje al huilen, zodra hij de rat in het vizier kreeg. Toen de psycholoog de rat verruilde voor het konijn en de knuffel werd de kleine Albert doodsbang voor alles wat harig was.
Conditionering
Voilà, de koppeling - harig beest en angst - was vastgenageld in het brein van Albert. Voortaan kroop Albert in elkaar zodra hij een harig beest of knuffel zag. Wat Pavlov al bij honden bewezen had, bleek ook voor mensen op te gaan. Conditionering blijkt niet zo ingewikkeld te zijn.
Gelukkig zijn dergelijke huiveringwekkende experimenten vandaag de dag ondenkbaar, maar het experiment laat wel zien hoe simpel emoties gekoppeld kunnen worden aan ervaringen.
Nog een voorbeeld: stel dat je flink ziek wordt nadat je een ei hebt gegeten. De kans is groot dat je een hele poos ieder ei links laat liggen, terwijl je verstandelijk heel goed weet dat je over het algemeen best een ei kunt eten.
Troosteten
Zelf kan ik mij herinneren dat ik als zesjarige op een zonnige zondag in de Caribische zee op een zee-appel trapte. Ik moet onbedaarlijk hebben gehuild, want mijn vader kocht - geheel tegen zijn gereformeerde principes in - een ijsje voor mij. Het maakte grote indruk op mij. Het weggetje: pijn - zoetigheid - troost, was in mijn brein aangelegd. Als ik pijn heb of me zielig voel, heb ik nog steeds de neiging mezelf te troosten met iets zachts en zoetigs.
Inzicht in jezelf is de eerste stap
En ik ben niet de enige. Veel vrouwen eten hun emoties weg en zoeken troost bij voedsel als ze bijvoorbeeld boos, bang of verdrietig zijn. Gek genoeg doen mannen dat veel minder; die grijpen eerder naar de alcohol.
Inzicht in jezelf is de eerste stap op weg naar ander gedrag. Voor mij was het een eyeopener om te ontdekken dat ik rond drie uur ’s middags steevast trek in iets lekkers heb. Inmiddels weet ik dat ik me rond dat tijdstip vaak eenzaam voel en behoefte heb aan contact. Drie uur was ongeveer het tijdstip dat mijn moeder ons vroeger limonade en een koekje gaf. We zaten gezellig aan de eettafel te kwekken en meestal probeerde ik een koekje extra te scoren. Tijdstip- gezelligheid - zoetigheid. De conditionering is er en het is de vraag of-ie ooit verdwijnt.
Negatief oordeel
Maar ik heb wél een keus: blijf ik snoepen rond een uur of drie of doorbreek ik mijn patroon?Bijvoorbeeld door iets anders te gaan doen of door simpelweg mijn eenzaamheid te voelen?Jammer genoeg hebben mensen vaak een negatief oordeel over emoties. Veel ouders leren hun kinderen dat ze sterk moeten zijn, niet moeten huilen, even flink moeten zijn, zich niet zo moeten aanstellen, vul maar in.
Emoties zijn richtingaanwijzers
Maar een mens heeft toch niet voor niets emoties? Integendeel! Emoties vertellen je of anderen over je grenzen heen gaan. Emoties zijn waarschuwingstekens, ze zijn richtingaanwijzers voor je behoeften. Ze zorgen ervoor dat je je kunt verbinden door juist je kwetsbaarheid te laten zien
Emoties vertellen je hoe het met je gaat. Ben je gekwetst, verdrietig, jaloers, erger je je, ben je beroerd, schaam je je? Door je emoties goed te kennen, kun je betere keuzen maken. Eigenlijk zijn emoties een kompas voor je welzijn.
Emoties willen herkend, erkend en geuit worden. Het woord emotie komt van emoveren, bewegen. Emoties komen op en ebben ook weer weg.
Vicieuze cirkel
Vrouwen die gaan eten als ze zich neerslachtig, onzeker, onrustig of moe voelen hebben vaak overgewicht. Het valt me op dat veel emotie-eters het liefst een streng dieet volgen om snel af te vallen. Even gauw tien kilo eraf en dan zijn ze er. Hopen ze, maar meestal raken ze van de wal in de sloot en zitten ze gevangen in de vicieuze cirkel van afvallen - aankomen - afvallen -aankomen.
Proefcliënten gevraagd
Het alternatief dat ik bied, is jezelf leren kennen: welke behoeften schuilen er achter emotionele honger? Welke saboterende gedachten spelen door je hoofd? Welke boodschappen heb jij van thuis meegekregen over het uiten van gevoelens?
Op dit moment doe ik een specialisatie in emotie-eten en volg ik bij Artiva food & vitality professionals de opleiding ‘Uit de ban van emotie-eten’.
